Best: Third Universe is Kumi Koda's fifth greatest hits album, following Best: Bounce & Lovers and Out Works & Collaboration Best. The covers resemble those of Best: Second Session, and Koda can be seen looking through the booklet for that album on the 2CD & 2CD+DVD edition cover. The album contains songs from both single and album releases stretching from "Koi no Tsubomi (恋のつぼみ Love Bud?)" to "Trick". Four of the A-side songs released during that time did not make it onto the best album: "Juicy" from the "4 Hot Wave" single, "Cherry Girl" from "Cherry Girl/Unmei" single, "Unmei (運命 Fate?)" from the "Cherry Girl/Unmei" single and "Aishō (愛証 Love Proof?)" from the "But/Aishō" single.

Universe is the eighth studio album by Koda, collecting songs from previous singles following her seventh album Trick. Two a-side tracks did not make it onto the studio album "Hashire! (走れ Run!?)" from the "3 Splash" single and "Faraway" from "It's All Love!".

These albums were released in three editions, CD+Ringtone (only containing the greatest hits album Best: Third Universe and a serial number card access to download ringtones of all the songs from her 8th studio album Universe, available only in Japan), 2CD (containing both the greatest hits and the 8th studio album) and 2CD+DVD (containing both albums and a DVD with the music videos for the songs on both albums). The album shifted 222,000 units within its first week, becoming the #1 album on the Oricon weekly charts.
